There it lies on a shelf
Beneath the picture of my husband and myself.
I lift it gently as I place it there
With tender loving care
As a reminder of the love we shared.

I glance at the beautiful red rose
And remember the fragrance sweet
When I picked it from the bush he planted
And lovingly tended it to flourish and grow.

Is that the time it was chosen
Or maybe was it one from the bouquet
Sent on Valentine's Day
Along with a box of candy sweet
Speaking of your love though no words did you say?

Oh yes, I remember well when it came.
It arrived and sat beside my hospital bed
After the birth of our child
And you tenderly kissed me
And spoke of our forever love tender and mild.

Maybe it is from a special time
When I had been away
You gave it to welcome me home
Letting me know you missed me while I was gone.

As I tenderly stroke the silken petals
Many times I had held such a rose
And smelled the fragrance sweet
As love filled my soul and heart
Knowing our love would never depart.

No, now I see it brittle and faded as it lies there
And remember when I placed it on the shelf.
It was from your funeral wreath
And I cried with inconsolable grief
That you no longer are by my side
But your love lingers to sustain me
Until in heaven we reunite for eternity.

I smile as I see it there on the shelf
The final rose from you
To show your love for me was ever true
And no longer am I bereft
So I smile and I turn away
Knowing I will see you again some sweet day
In the sweet bye and bye.
