It begins at Five a.m. on a hot Summer day.
The Robin's call, "Get up! Get up! Don't delay!"
A Cardinal is singing loud and clear.
He seems to be saying, "Good cheer. Good cheer."

The Owls bid good-night then go to bed
As the sun raises his golden head.
A Blue Jay gives a rowdy squawk.
Up high there's the sound of a hunting Hawk.

Then Chickadees start to fuss and scold.
Such tiny birds but Oh! so bold!
Sparrows add their sweet song of mirth
Singing out joyfully for all they are worth.

Loudest of all, giving a thrill.
The Mockingbird mocks from a distant hill.
His riotous calls make one laugh.
He sings ALL songs in whole, not half!

The Doves coo and so softly share
Their songs to the blue skies fair.
The choruses and warbles last all day long
With occasional pauses in sweet bird song.

Then, drowsy and softer as sun fades from sight,
All gets quiet as they bid good-night.
At last the call comes and all hearts fill.
There is joy at the song of the Whippoorwill.
