Memories of long ago drifting through my mind
Backward, ever backward, to a happier, gentler time
Playing tag or hopscotch with friends out in the street,
Sipping cokes from real glass bottles, a bubbly, fizzy treat
Making dolls from hollyhocks that grew outside the kitchen door
More precious than the baby dolls you could buy in any store
Sitting underneath the maple tree
Listening to the humming of the bee
Running underneath the hose on a warm and sunny day
Never ever dreaming fun filled days would fade away
And then would come the Autumn, leaves turned red and brown
The aroma when we burned them drifting through the town
In Winter going to the farm to sleigh ride down the hill
The cold crisp air, the rushing wind that gave us such a thrill
The seasons ended all too soon, now I am old and gray
I keep these memories in my heart to treasure every day.
