A dozen roses sit
on the mantle
In remembrance of Valentine's Day
He behaves as if nothing happened
Ignoring the quarrel of yesterday
Determined to keep up appearances
For his co-workers and their friends
In private, verbally abusing her daily
She's wondering if it ever ends
Letting others see only her public face
Alone in bed at night, she cries
And dreads it when he comes home each day
It's so sad when a marriage dies
As long as she enables her abuser
Her troubled life will remain the same
So afraid to share her confidence
Playing his sordid, twisted game
On the surface, they're a perfect couple
As her deep loathing for him grows
While he displays his "love" for her
With the occasional token rose
